Pidgin and the new ICQ WIM protocol on Gentoo

ICQ recently abandoned its OSCAR protocol and switched to the new WIM protocol. As of April 2019, this is preventing several clients from connecting. This howto provides a solution for Pidgin on Gentoo Linux.

Steps

1. Install Pidgin:

   # emerge pidgin
   

2. Fetch and install Eion Robb's plugin. Simply follow his instructions at https://github.com/EionRobb/icyque:

   $ git clone git://github.com/EionRobb/icyque.git
   $ cd icyque
   $ make
   $ sudo make install
   

3. Start Pidgin and add your ICQ account.
